「手描き壁紙 - blossoms: 壁という場のための絵画」展開催のお知らせ

西新宿のヒルトン東京地下1階に位置するフジギャラリー新宿では、2026年3月14日（土）より4月26日（日）まで、島田由子による展覧会「手描き壁紙 — blossoms: 壁という場のための絵画」を開催いたします。

本展の中心となるのは、春の到来を象徴する桜を描いた大画面の作品です。壁紙を支持体とし、満開の花々、はらはらと舞う花弁、ほころびかけた蕾を作家が壁紙上に描き、その作品を正面の壁に貼り込み、壁面を一体の画面とした作品として展示いたします。また、その他の壁面には、桜や季節を主題とした絵画作品を展示予定です。

島田由子は、日本画の伝統を基盤にしながら、襖絵を中心に現代の住空間と鑑賞体験の融合を見据えた表現に取り組んできました。作品の多くは、伝統的な素材の持つ特性を生かし、儚い草花を線と余白を通して描いたものです。本展では、その実践を壁という形式へと広げます。

近年、欧米のインテリア分野では、アーティストによる壁面ペインティングや、絵画的なイメージをもとに制作されたウォールペーパー・ミュラルが取り入れられています。本展は、そうした空間表現の動きも視野に入れながら、日本の襖絵の実践を現代の壁面へと広げる試みです。

アーティスト・ステートメント / Artist’s Statement

私は、襖絵の制作を中心に、室内空間のための絵画を制作してきました。襖絵に限らず、屏風絵、壁掛けの襖絵、円形の絵画、小さな襖絵など、空間に合わせたさまざまな形態での絵画を提案してきました。

そうした制作の流れの中で、本展では初めて「壁紙」という形態での作品を発表します。空間の背景として、暮らしの中に穏やかさや晴れやかさを添えること。

その思いを手仕事に込めながら、これまで襖絵として培ってきた意匠や表現を、現代の空間における「壁」という場でも生かすことができないかと考えました。

襖という形式にとどまらず、絵画が空間とどのように関わり得るのかを探ることは、私の制作において一貫したテーマです。壁紙という新たな形式を通して、絵画が鑑賞の対象であると同時に、空間の一部として静かに存在する在り方を提示したいと考えています。

この試みが、手描きによる襖絵の表現を、現代の空間へとひらいていく一つの可能性となれば幸いです。

“Hand-painted Wallpaper — Blossoms: Paintings for the Wall as a Place”

FUJI GALLERY SHINJUKU, located on the basement floor of the Hilton Tokyo in Nishi-Shinjuku, will present a solo exhibition by Yoshiko Shimada, “Hand-painted Wallpaper — Blossoms: Paintings for the Wall as a Place,” from 14 March to 26 April 2026.

The central work of the exhibition is a large-scale painting of cherry blossoms, featuring full blooms, falling petals and emerging buds. Executed on wallpaper as its support, it is installed on the gallery’s main wall as a single, unified image. Additional paintings exploring themes of cherry blossoms and the seasons will also be on view.

Rooted in the tradition of Japanese painting, Shimada has focused primarily on fusuma-e (paintings on sliding doors), developing a practice that considers the relationship between interior space and the act of viewing.
Many of her works make use of traditional materials, rendering delicate plant forms through the disciplined use of line and negative space. In this exhibition, she extends that practice into the format of the wall.

In recent years, European and North American interiors have incorporated wall paintings and mural-style wallpapers derived from artistic imagery as elements of spatial design. This exhibition situates the practice of Japanese fusuma-e within a contemporary wall format.

Artist statement

I have centered my practice on the creation of fusuma paintings, producing works for interior spaces.
In addition to fusuma, I have developed paintings in various formats suited to different environments,including folding screens, wall-mounted fusuma works, circular paintings, and small-scale pieces.
Through these varied forms, I have continually explored how painting can respond to and exist within a given space.

During this practice, this exhibition marks my first presentation of works in the form of wallpaper.
As a background within space, I hope my work may bring a sense of calmness and brightness to everyday life.
With this intention embedded in my handwork, I began to consider whether the motifs and expressions cultivated through fusuma painting could also be carried into the contemporary wall as a site.

For me, moving beyond the fixed format of the fusuma has always been part of an ongoing inquiry into the relationship between painting and space.
Wallpaper offers a new context in which painting is not only viewed as an object but also experienced as a presence integrated into its surroundings.

Through this attempt, I hope to open another possibility for hand-painted fusuma expression within contemporary environments, allowing traditional practices to find renewed relevance in today’s spaces.

About the Artist

: Born in Hyogo Prefecture, currently lives in Chiba Prefecture
1983: Graduated from Kanazawa College of Art, majoring in Japanese painting
1988–2019: In charge of hand-painted patterns and design at a fusuma processing company
1991–2005: Studied under Haruki Isshiki, former director of the Japan Nanga (literati painting) Academy.
1998: Acquired the trade name "Yuko Shimada, Fusuma-e artisan". Officially designated as a Traditional Craft of Chiba
: Prefecture in FY2024.

Hand-painted fusuma paintings, folding screens, sliding door hangings and partition wall paintings on order, as well as holding exhibitions of her work.
